How it works
Audio Inbox is an Android app that detects incoming messages from WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and Gmail, and reads them aloud using the text-to-speech engine installed on the device. To do this, the app requires Android's notification access, which the user must grant explicitly.
Data processed
Android's notification service technically provides the app with the device's notifications. Audio Inbox immediately discards notifications from unsupported apps. For WhatsApp, Telegram, supported SMS apps, and Gmail, depending on the notification content, the app processes:
- Sender name or label
- Message text
- Messenger name
- Timestamp and technical notification ID
- Playback and filter settings
- Whether a Bluetooth audio device is connected
After a message has been read out successfully, the app locally stores the sender, the messenger, the timestamp, and a preview of the first 50 characters. A limited local error log contains no message text or sender names.
Purpose and legal basis
Data is processed solely to detect and filter selected messages, read them out locally, and display the local message log. Processing takes place at the user's request and on the basis of the system permissions they have granted.
No transmission to the developer
Audio Inbox has no backend, no user account, no advertising, no analytics or tracking SDKs, and no cloud TTS connection. The app does not request internet permission. Message data is not transmitted to the developer or to advertising networks.
Speech recognition runs on-device using an ML Kit model bundled with the app. The text to be read out is handed to the text-to-speech engine selected by the user on Android. If the user has installed a third-party TTS engine, that engine's own terms apply; Audio Inbox itself does not use any cloud TTS service.
Storage and deletion
Settings, local message previews, and the limited technical error log are stored in the app's protected storage. Cloud backup and device transfer are disabled for this data. The data can be fully removed by clearing the app's data in Android's system settings or by uninstalling the app.
Permissions and special access
- Notification access: Detects new WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and Gmail messages. Access can be revoked at any time in Android's system settings.
- Notifications: Displays the running foreground service and important error messages.
- Foreground service and wake lock: Ensures reliable local speech output, even with the screen off.
- Battery optimization exemption: An optional system dialog to improve reliability. It can be declined.
- Start after device restart: Re-registers the notification service that has already been authorized.
Recipients and third parties
The developer receives no personal data from the app. The locally installed Android TTS engine receives the text to be spoken within the Android TTS system. No data is shared with any other third party by the developer.
Children
Audio Inbox is not specifically directed at children. The app does not create profiles and contains no advertising.
